Can an L dependent spouse accept a job outside the corporate group?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

A qualifying L spouse may generally work as a consequence of valid dependent status, subject to appropriate evidence and ordinary employer checks.

Confirm the dependent’s own status record

A spouse considering an unrelated U.S. role should be analysed from the actual proposal, not from an abbreviated label in an email or a planning spreadsheet. The spouse’s work benefit flows from qualifying dependent classification, not from the principal’s employer or the new company’s business plan.

Dependent children do not receive the same employment permission. Start with the facts that exist today: names of parties, dates, duties, ownership rights, payments, and any condition that could change the arrangement. A future intention can be useful context, but it should not be presented as an accomplished fact.

Preserve passports, admission records, relationship documents, and status evidence; a prospective employer may also require licensing or onboarding documents. Keep originals available and make translations complete where the chosen process calls for them. If a document is unavailable, explain the gap accurately rather than filling it with an assumption.

The child’s school plans and the spouse’s job plan should be recorded individually, with dates checked against the family’s status records. That person’s nationality, status record, age, planned study, and planned activity may require a separate review. Government fees, filing locations, visa availability, and procedural instructions can change, so confirm them from the current official source before money is committed or travel is booked.

Check current evidence requirements before onboarding; do not assume the principal’s approval notice alone proves the spouse’s authorization. The purpose of preparation is a clear factual record and an informed route comparison; it is not a promise that an officer will reach a particular result.
