THE SHORT ANSWER

Family members can share housing, finances, and travel goals while having different immigration questions. Start with the principal’s route, then record every accompanying person’s relationship, age, nationality, intended activity, documents, and timing.

01

Separate financial support from family category

Hypothetical example: a parent contributes money to an adult child’s business and expects to help after arrival. Funding does not turn the parent into a dependent, and family travel does not make the parent an authorized worker. Describe the money arrangement and the parent’s intended activity separately from the principal’s eligibility.

02

Describe actual activities

A TD dependent may study but cannot use that status as employment permission. Qualifying L and E spouses may generally work because of valid dependent status with suitable evidence; children do not have the same work benefit. School attendance, unpaid help, a practicum, an internship, and productive work should be described by their real tasks rather than by a convenient label.

03

Protect date-sensitive records

Maintain passports, relationship documents, prior civil records, admission history, school dates, and any relevant age information in a household timeline. A principal’s approval or business closing does not resolve every family member’s status. Check official instructions at the point of action, especially where travel, work onboarding, or an immigrant process is contemplated. Keep the household plan realistic about practical tasks. Helping at a family business, caring for children while a spouse works, taking a course, and volunteering can involve different facts. Do not assume an unpaid role is outside immigration rules simply because the family calls it help. Identify the location, schedule, supervision, beneficiary, and productive output. Then consult the current classification rules before beginning. A separate folder and timeline for each person can prevent an adult child, parent, or spouse from disappearing inside the principal’s narrative. Before travel, review each person’s passport validity, relationship record, expected location, proposed study or employment, and the evidence that will be used to confirm status. Do not rely on a family spreadsheet prepared for housing or school enrolment as immigration proof. It can support planning, but the underlying records and the current official rule are what matter. Update the individual line when marriage, divorce, birth, age, or proposed activity changes. Financial arrangements should be recorded with equal care. A joint account, a loan, a gift, or a promise to cover expenses can explain funding, but it does not alter the individual immigration classification. Name the account holder, source, transfer, and conditions so that a shared household budget cannot be mistaken for a shared legal entitlement. If a family member’s role is uncertain, write the uncertainty down and avoid describing the person as a worker, student, dependent, or investor until the supporting facts and current rules are checked.
