Hypothetical example: a Plympton-Wyoming household is considering a professional job, a transfer within a related company, and the purchase of a business. Those ideas ask different questions. The job must be described by duties and credentials; the transfer by corporate relationship and prior employment; the purchase by nationality, funding, operating authority, and commercial risk. The practical starting point is a dated fact sheet that separates what has happened from what is merely being considered. Start by writing three separate headings—employment, company relationship, and funds—and place each fact under only one heading unless a document truly connects them. This prevents a purchase agreement from being mistaken for an employment record, or a management title from being mistaken for ownership. When facts change, preserve the earlier version and add a dated update. That record of change is often more useful than a polished narrative with no timeline.
Six pathways are covered here. The professional classification is TN. The two intracompany options use the labels L-1A; L-1B. Treaty-investor material is E-2. Separate immigrant-investor material covers EB-5. Official Gold Card material is also included. These are federal pathways, so municipal residence does not create a separate eligibility rule. A remote consultation can help a Canadian resident organize questions and official materials, but the eventual decision belongs to the relevant U.S. authority. Each pathway has its own evidence, family consequences, timing, and financial commitments. TN is a temporary professional classification. The L classifications concern transfers within qualifying organizations, with different role tests. E-2 is a treaty-investor classification rather than an immigrant category. EB-5 is an immigrant-investor process with conditional residence after the applicable later stage. Gold Card information must be read from its official source, especially before any payment. A route comparison should identify why an element is met, what document supports it, and what remains unknown.
Choose what brings you here. Leave with a short list of things to discuss—not another long form to fill out.
Read the actual work, credential, employer, and temporary purpose together.

Begin with the intended activity. For employment, identify the legal employer, recipient of services, recurring duties, pay arrangement, and proposed dates. For a transfer, chart the foreign and U.S. entities before relying on a brand name or reporting line. For an investment, trace who owns the funds, who can approve the transaction, and who will direct daily operations. These categories may overlap in one commercial plan, yet they should not be blended until the records support the connection. A document index can use five columns: proposition, document name, date, issuer, and open question. For example, a passport supports citizenship, not a professional credential; a lease may support premises, not operational control; a bank statement can show a balance, not necessarily the lawful origin of the balance. This restrained method leaves space to identify contradictions before they become a declaration or travel problem. It also makes a remote review more efficient because the underlying record can be located quickly.

A practical plan.
No promises we can’t keep.
Describe the U.S. work, transfer, purchase, or immigration objective in ordinary language, then identify who benefits and who controls it.
Group identity records, contracts, company records, credentials, funding records, and family documents by the fact each one proves.
Compare the documented facts with the professional, organizational, nationality, investment, or immigrant requirements of the possible route.
Check each accompanying person’s proposed activity and separate process before relying on a common travel or start date.
A careful file does not overstate certainty. It can distinguish a signed offer from a draft, a completed wire from an escrow instruction, and a corporate plan from present operations. That distinction is especially useful when an employer, seller, franchisor, lender, or relative controls part of the timetable. Put dates beside each event and preserve the document that proves it. If a term has more than one meaning, quote the operative agreement rather than choosing the most convenient interpretation. This approach is not designed to make every fact fit a preferred route. It is designed to reveal which route, if any, fits the real arrangement. A founder may learn that an employment-based route is inappropriate; a manager may discover that a transfer route needs clearer corporate evidence; an investor may decide not to release capital until conditions are understood. Those are useful conclusions. They are preferable to spending on filings or relocation based on an unsupported label.
Find your pathwayShneur Herman provides remote consultation support. Jo Kubti participates in that remote work. Alexander Paton participates in that remote work. The team can help structure a remote preparation conversation around official rules and the applicant’s own documents. It does not substitute for a government decision, and a cross-border plan can also require advice from appropriately qualified professionals for tax, corporate, employment, licensing, or legal matters. Keep the route discussion anchored to the actual facts and current official instructions. Before a consultation, prepare a short chronology, a list of every entity involved, and a note of the desired start, closing, or travel dates. Remove passwords and unnecessary financial account numbers from materials shared electronically. The discussion can identify questions for the appropriate official source or qualified professional. It should never encourage altered records, hidden ownership, backdated agreements, or activity that is not authorized. Accuracy protects both the applicant and the people relying on the plan.

No. The relevant U.S. classifications are governed federally. Residence can matter to practical document gathering, but it does not alter the legal elements.
It can provide facts for comparison, but each pathway tests those facts differently. Keep the employment, ownership, and funding analyses separate until they are established.
They are important planning facts, but they do not replace the principal applicant’s eligibility. Record each person’s planned activity and status question separately.
