Can I start orientation before my TN authorization is in place?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

A company orientation date is not immigration authorization. The content of any pre-start activity should be reviewed before U.S. work or travel occurs.

Put business milestones beside immigration milestones

Create a calendar that separates recruiting, onboarding, travel, security access, training, and productive work. A virtual welcome call from Canada may raise different facts from hands-on training or customer work in the United States, so avoid treating all orientation as one harmless category. Ask the employer to identify the first date on which the applicant is expected to perform services, make decisions, access systems, or be paid.

Then compare that date with the actual process selected and its current requirements. If a customer needs a person on site sooner than the immigration timetable permits, the company should design a lawful staffing alternative instead of recasting work as observation. Documentation also has its own timing: credential evaluations, translations, client documents, and licences may not arrive at the same speed.

Keep dated copies of the final offer and assignment records, because last-minute changes to duties or employer identity can undermine an earlier analysis. The sensible sequence is to make the role clear, prepare truthful evidence, seek the appropriate authorization, and then begin the U.S. activity when it is permitted.

Tell the employer promptly if a record or evaluation will arrive later than expected. A modest rescheduling decision made early is usually easier than a last-day revision. The written sequence should reflect what really happened, because dated documents often reveal when a proposed role changed or became final.
