Read the general professional work overview
A strong TN record makes the professional occupation, qualification, employer arrangement, and temporary assignment easy to examine. It should not rely on a title alone. Review the final set for internal consistency: the job title, duties, dates, employer name, customer role, and qualification should not change from one exhibit to the next without explanation. A concise index helps locate each fact. Before travel or a filing decision, recheck current official instructions and use qualified advice for facts that need legal judgement. Keep a dated copy of the final employer support material and update it if the business facts change before the chosen immigration step. The file should make clear what the employer knows directly, what a customer confirms, and what the applicant’s records establish. That separation prevents a convenient but unreliable one-letter narrative. Ask questions early when any document describes a different employer, occupation, or duty than the draft support letter.
Choose the occupation before drafting the letter
Read the USMCA Appendix 2 occupation entry first. Identify the exact profession being claimed and the qualification it lists. Then break the offered role into ordinary duties, responsibility level, customer context, and outputs. A support letter should explain why the core assignment fits the chosen profession without erasing routine components. Avoid copying a generic job description from a company website. The goal is a coherent match among the official entry, the applicant’s credentials, and the real work proposed by the U.S. employer or qualifying engagement.
Collect credentials with their limitations
Gather the degree, diploma, licence, transcript, experience letters, and any other record required by the selected entry. Do not assume a broad résumé fixes a credential mismatch. For education completed outside Canada, Mexico, or the United States, consider whether a reliable equivalency evaluation is needed. If a licence affects the ability to practise in the intended jurisdiction, identify what the applicant may lawfully do at the proposed start date. Keep originals and provide complete certified translations when the procedure requires them.
Document the working arrangement honestly
The employer record should identify the legal employer, compensation, location, duration, supervision, and professional activity. Where a customer receives services, add agreements or scopes that clarify the project while keeping each party’s statements within its knowledge. Disclose ownership interests and assess self-employment restrictions before presenting a nominal employment arrangement. Include citizenship evidence separately. Finally, put the assignment and travel dates on a calendar so that commercial urgency does not get mistaken for permission to start U.S. work.
