Start with the TN eligibility and application overview
The engineer entry's own qualification rule
USMCA Appendix 2 lists "engineer" with its own credential path: a baccalaureate or licentiate degree in engineering, or a state or provincial licence. A process engineer relying on the degree route needs a transcript and credential evidence that clearly maps to an engineering discipline, not an adjacent technical field. Where the degree title is ambiguous, a licensing body's own written confirmation of the engineering designation is stronger evidence than the diploma alone.
Engineer versus technologist titles
Industrial contracting employers often use "engineer" loosely for roles that are properly engineering technologist or technician positions, which sit under a different Appendix 2 entry with its own rules. Before filing, the actual duties on the turnaround, not the internal job title, should be checked against the engineer entry's definition, because a technologist doing engineer-labeled work does not become an engineer for TN purposes simply because payroll calls the position that.
Temporary entry for repeated short assignments
TN status requires a genuine intent to enter temporarily, but temporary does not mean a single visit only. Three separate six-week turnaround assignments for the same employer in a year can still be temporary entries if each one has a defined end tied to a specific project, rather than an open-ended posting. The pattern should be documented assignment by assignment, not summarized as ongoing employment.
Prearranged employment and port-of-entry evidence
Canadian citizens generally present TN evidence directly at the port of entry rather than obtaining a separate visa stamp; some employers instead file Form I-129 in advance. Either path needs a support letter describing the specific turnaround scope, the engineering duties involved, and the defined assignment dates, so the temporary and professional character of the work is clear on its face. Hypothetical example: a geologist is engaged to map groundwater beneath a quarry for a defined season. The employer must decide whether its letter identifies the geologist duties and project limits rather than broad consulting work; the degree transcript, signed engagement and schedule are the records that settle that question. A material change in duties should be assessed before the revised work begins.
