Draw the household timeline before the assignment, because two clocks run at once

THE SHORT ANSWER

Hypothetical example: the Achterberg household leaves Petrolia on a specialized-knowledge transfer. The principal has a five-year ceiling. His spouse is a medical laboratory technologist who intends to work. Their elder child is nineteen and starting university; the younger is fourteen. Nothing about that arrangement is unusual, and its two clocks, the ceiling on the principal's status and the elder child's twenty-first birthday, will collide in the middle of the assignment unless somebody draws them on the same page first.

01

The spouse is authorized to work, and the authorization comes from her status

A spouse in the dependent category of an intracompany transfer is employment authorized incident to status, which means the permission arrives with the status rather than being granted by an employer or tied to a particular job. She may work for anyone, in any field, subject to whatever licensing her occupation itself requires. That last point deserves attention in a regulated laboratory profession, because a state may require registration or certification before she can practise, and that process runs on its own timetable. What she cannot do is outlast the principal's status: her authorization is derived, so when his ends, hers ends with it, regardless of how well her own career is going by then.

02

A child's derivative status ends at twenty-one, whatever the school calendar says

Unmarried children under twenty-one accompany as derivatives and may attend school at any level, but they hold no work authorization and their status ends on the twenty-first birthday. For the elder Achterberg child that birthday arrives partway through a degree. Continuing to study afterwards means arranging a student route in advance, which involves an institution issuing the necessary record and the family meeting requirements about funding and intent that have nothing to do with the parents' assignment. Starting that process in the final term is the version that goes badly. Starting it a year ahead, with the institution's international office involved, is routine. The younger child's position raises the same question later and can be diarised now while it is still abstract.

03

Each person's own activity decides their route, and the parents' plan does not cover it

The habit worth breaking is thinking of a household as having one immigration position. It has as many as it has people. A spouse who wants to work asks a work question; a child who wants to study asks a study question; a grandparent who wants to visit for six months asks a visitor question, and none of them is answered by the principal's category. Two further facts belong on the same page. Canadian citizenship and Canadian permanent residence are different, and a household can contain both, which changes what is open to each person. And permanent residence in the United States is not citizenship; it does not become citizenship automatically, and naturalization is a separate process with its own requirements.
